Inland Empire last night
I just saw the Seattle opening screening of David Lynch's new film Inland Empire. David (Mr Lynch?) was there afterwards to answer questions, including one brave person who asked "Before I read about all the theories on the Internet, can you tell us what the movie was about?" David's response was something along the lines of "Once you put art onto the screen, in film, you don't want to bring it back into words, everyone will have their own interpretations." Without a doubt, at 3 hours long there will be plenty of fodder for interpretation (not to mention sheer confusion).
I am very much a David Lynch virgin, not realising (or rather being reminded after the fact) he was responsible for classics like Twin Peaks, Elephant Man, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and others (all of which I have not seen).
I think I am still digesting -- as my friends I saw it with said, you have to discard your conventional notions of movies requiring plot and structure. On the other hand, I recall other friends who saw Mulholland Drive walking out at the end of it shaking their heads and going "What the fuck?". Ditto for me. But Laura Dern's performance without a doubt was amazing.
Update: I took some shuteye at around the halfway mark, but I thought I was just drifting in and out of semi-consciousness. I have since been told by my companions that I was snoring :P. Classy.
